PSHE
Intent
At Falla Park Community Primary School we believe that Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education is at the heart of our children’s education. We aim to support our children to become healthy, independent and resilient members of society who show care and compassion for others. Our PSHE curriculum goes hand in hand with our core values which underpin our day to day life in school.
We support children to understand how they are developing personally and socially and tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up, alongside relationships and sex education. We aim to equip our children with the knowledge and skills they need to keep safe, to recognise positive and negative relationships and understand the importance of and how to take care of both their physical and mental wellbeing. We provide our children with opportunities to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse and multicultural society. We value the diversity of all those in our school and wider community and strive to develop positive relationships based on care and understanding.
We encourage our children to play a positive role in contributing to the life of the school as well as the wider community. In addition to our comprehensive approach to PSHE, the Skills Builder Framework is also incorporated within our curriculum which provides children with the 8 essential skills needed to thrive both in school and in later life. The essential skills are:
- Listening
- Speaking
- Creativity
- Team Work
- Problem Solving
- Staying Positive
- Aiming High
- Leadership
Implementation
At Falla Park we use the SCARF (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship) scheme of work. SCARF provides a comprehensive spiral curriculum for PSHE and RSE education, including mental health and wellbeing. Using SCARF across all year groups ensures progression in knowledge, attitudes, values, and skills. Teachers can adapt the scheme in order to be responsive to the needs of the children and the context of our school. With a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, SCARF enables us to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE and RSE education.
In Early Years Personal, Social and Emotional Development is one of the prime areas of learning. Adults in Early Years support children to be able to interact effectively and develop positive attitudes towards themselves and others. Strong, warm and supportive relationships with adults enable children to learn how to understand their own feelings and those of others and manage their emotions effectively. Daily routines and continuous provision also play a vital role.
The SCARF scheme is divided into six units with one unit being taught each half term. The units are:
- Me and my relationships
- Valuing difference
- Keeping myself safe
- Rights and responsibilities
- Being my best
- Growing and changing
In Key Stage 1 and 2, we deliver discrete weekly lessons. We ensure that individuals as well as the class as a whole have opportunities to talk about and reflect on issues that are important to them. Alongside the SCARF scheme, we weave many other elements of the curriculum into our school community. Children are involved in many whole school events such as charity campaigns, awareness days/weeks which provide great opportunities for our children to explore a variety of topical issues such as Remembrance Day, Safer Internet Day, Antibullying Week, Show Racism the Red Card and Children’s Mental Health week.
Work is recorded in books. Children are assessed at the end of each half termly unit against the ‘I can statements’ taught that term.
Impact
Our PSHE curriculum prepares the children for the next stage of their education as well as their adult life. The children’s positive attitude and behaviour and the way they conduct themselves around school is testament to the emphasis placed on PSHE throughout the school. They demonstrate the schools core values of respect, responsibility and compassion. Children demonstrate an understanding of their emotions and feelings and those of others.
We strive to ensure that children apply their learning both within and beyond the curriculum and are happy, healthy and successful young people.
